Pulsed light laser (IPL) treatment is based on the application of thermal pulses around the eye to stimulate the Meibomian glands in order to reactivate their normal function and thus alleviate the symptoms of diseases such as blepharitis or dry eye.
By applying this procedure on the periorbital area and the cheekbone, the Meibomian glands are brought back to provide both the quantity and the quality of the lipid flow needed by the patient's tears, thus consolidating the lipid layer. This would prevent tear evaporation, improve tear quality and reduce inflammation of the ocular surface.
IPL laser treatment lasts 10-15 minutes and is painless. However, patients may feel the flashes of light emitted by the equipment during treatment and feel warmth in the area.
After treatment, redness may appear in the periocular area. For this reason, ophthalmologists recommend the application of moisturizing cream and/or sun protection both on the day the treatment is performed and for at least 3 days afterwards.
