The importance of the molecular weight of hyaluronic acid in artificial tears

Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of our body, which can be used as a treatment for multiple pathologies in different areas.

In ophthalmology, and more specifically in the treatment of dry eye syndrome, it is used for its ability to retain water, thus maintaining the stability of the tear film and reducing dryness.

Multiple publications endorse the use of hyaluronic acid in artificial tear formulations, attributing to it the following properties:

  • Increase moisture retention, protecting the cornea from dehydration and thus reducing the symptoms of ocular dryness.
  • Improve tear film stability.
  • Have an anti-inflammatory effect.
  • Increase tear film thickness.
  • Reduce oxidative stress of the conjunctival epithelium in patients with dry eye.
  • Reduce friction caused by eye movement and external environmental agents.
  • Contribute to wound healing.
  • Keep the ocular surface lubricated.
Why is the molecular weight of hyaluronic acid important?

High molecular weight hyaluronic acid, also known as long-chain hyaluronic acid, exhibits high viscoelasticity. This allows it to behave viscous at rest and fluid in motion. Because of this, and its protective capacity, it inhibits inflammation of the ocular surface.

On the other hand, low molecular weight or short-chain hyaluronic acid has a lower viscoelasticity and a pro-inflammatory effect, which can cause discomfort when used in tear formulations.

Multiple clinical studies1 underline the importance of using eye drops with high molecular weight hyaluronic acid in patients suffering from dry eye. In addition, hyaluronic acid can be combined with other compounds to improve hydration and lubrication of the ocular surface.

At Farmamix Vision we have iVISION EYE DROPS, a natural tear substitute that is formulated with high molecular weight hyaluronic acid (long chain polymer) for the symptomatic treatment of dry eye syndrome.

iVISION EYE DROPS also contains hypromellose, which is a viscous polymer with beneficial properties for the tear film, protecting and lubricating the ocular surface, reducing the sensation of discomfort and providing relief to irritated eyes. Hyaluronic acid, formulated as sodium hyaluronate, is a viscous polymer that lubricates the tear surface and protects it from friction caused by eye movement and environmental agents.

iVISION EYE DROPS feature a unique combination of hyaluronic acid (0.2%) and hypromellose (0.2%) to achieve greater hydration and a longer tear permanence on the ocular surface.

iVISION EYE DROPS is available in multidose (10ml) and single-dose (20 vials of 0.5ml) formats. In both cases it is free of preservatives and phosphates. It can be used with contact lenses.
